Our charcoal comes from acacia hardwood bushes found in Namibia. We collaborate with the Forest Stewardship Council, an international environmental nongovernmental organization, to identify appropriate regions where acacia bushes have become invasive. Once identified, we sustainably harvest the acacia, transport it to our facility for processing, and package it for further use.
Absolutely! Our charcoal is made 100% chemical-free, ensuring a natural and pure grilling experience. When you use our charcoal, you're not only choosing a clean burn, but also enhancing the flavor of your BBQ naturally without any chemical aftertaste. You eat what you grill. Why cook with chemicals when you have a choice not to?
Yes! Although we cannot speak for other charcoal brands, our products are 100% natural, making them perfectly suitable for use in composting. Charcoal adds carbon to the compost, which is important for the process. Additionally, charcoal aids in enhancing soil drainage and moisture retention, which can help increase crop yields.
As our charcoal comes from acacia bushes, they will naturally vary in size and you may find some smaller pieces. We prioritize sustainability and never harvest from old-growth trees. While smaller pieces are expected, our screening process involves going through a sieve to eliminate pieces that we believe are too small. If you believe you received a mishandled bag with crushed charcoal, please contact us at hello@thegoodcharcoal.com and we will get it sorted out right away. Acacia hardwood, renowned for its hardness compared to old-growth hickory and oak, makes for great charcoal. It provides superior heat retention and can reach higher temperatures so you don't have to use as much. Size does not determine the quality of burn, but if you prefer larger pieces that are uniform in size, consider trying our Super Briquettes!
Our charcoal is not specifically formulated as activated charcoal intended for filtration purposes. Therefore, we do not recommend its use for water purification purposes. Our primary focus is on producing charcoal specifically designed for grilling purposes.

We prefer to use a charcoal chimney. It's natural, clean, and very effective, normally fully lit in 15-20 minutes. We recommend using natural materials like a small piece of paper or a tumbleweed beneath the chimney. With acacia hardwood charcoal, it should ignite quite easily. Watch our video on how to light The Good Charcoal using a charcoal chimney. If lighter fluid is your preferred choice, no judgement, just be sure to follow the lighter fluid manufacturer's instructions.
